  1. 1839-1917. English pottery designer. He set 
  2. up his own factory 1888 in Fulham, London, 
  3. producing tiles and pottery painted with 
  4. flora and fauna in a style typical of the 
  5. Arts and Crafts Movement. Inspired by William 
  6. Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, he started 
  7. designing tiles and glass for Morris's Merton 
  8. Abbey factory. Influenced by Persian and 
  9. Italian styles - he spent many months in 
  10. Italy in later years - he also developed 
  11. lustre techniques (a way of covering pottery 
  12. with an iridescent metallic surface).
